The Bureau of Economic Analysis of the Department of Commerce is a principal Federal source of economic statistics. It is responsible for the preparation, development, and interpretation of the U.S. national economic accounts including data items such as gross domestic product (GDP), consumer spending, and personal income. The BEA is also responsible for international accounts, including data items such as balance-of-payments data critical to monetary, trade, investment, exchange rate, and financial policies. Lastly, the BEA covers accounts on a regional and industry level, as some programs focus on states’ spending and revenue forecasts, industry, and producer price indexes.
