Abstract:

The Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics (LEHD) Program is a state-of-the-art research and development program that integrates multiple large data sources to produce data and information about the dynamics of the American economy and society, while strictly protecting the confidentiality of individuals and firms that provide the data.

Since its inception in 1998, the LEHD program has achieved major accomplishments in its research of technical methods and solutions, proving that large-scale data integration with confidentiality protection is feasible with the support of modern information technology. The presentations will:

-- Describe how the research results have been applied in several areas including: Local Employment Dynamics (LED), which through a federal-state partnership to receive and process quarterly data from each of about 29 state partners produces 29 Quarterly Workforce Indicators by industry, age and sex for local areas; and Mapping or Geographical Information System (GIS) applications that describe how workers travel to and from work for transportation planning purposes; and,
-- Describe uses of the state-specific Quarterly Workforce Indicators, demonstrating how they portray the dynamic nature of local economies. Even when the job numbers show weak or no job growth, firms are constantly creating and destroying jobs, as well as hiring and laying off workers. Decision-makers need to know where this action is taking place-in which industries, for which workers, and what the earnings are-so they can help promote job growth and economic development.
