Abstract:

There is a paradox in the information age: the Internet has made information more abundant but not necessarily more available. Getting answers to simple questions can be a vexing problem. Even when information is made available on the Internet, answers are almost always provided to predetermined questions or in predetermined formats which do not necessarily answer the question that the user has in mind. Technical users often have to spend hours and sometimes days to obtain answers to questions for which the data is, in theory, "available on the internet." Non-technical users often have no real way to obtain the answers that they need.

OneSource Technologies, Inc. has compiled statistical data from numerous governmental sources into a unified database and has developed an interface that allows nontechnical users to ask complex questions and receive specific answers in formats that they can adjust to their own needs. Taken together, the database and the query engine form RegionalOneSource, which contains information on over 23,000 data items for more than 25,000 cities, towns villages and census designated places, all states and territories, all counties, and all metropolitan areas including all CMSAs, PMSAs, MSAs, and NECMAs. It represents the largest aggregation of statistical data ever compiled for the United States and its constituent geopolitical regions and subregions.

The session will provide a live demonstration of RegionalOneSource, take questions from the audience, and solicit feedback and suggestions for future development
